5 Small Dogs That Are Easy to House Train
Jack Russel Terrier: I live with one of these energetic little guys. He is eager to please, so house training him wasn’t so bad (not as bad as my Chihuahua, who I still have problems with from time to time). He will bug you and jump at you when he has to go out, running from the door to you and back again. He likes treats, so rewarding him worked well! The good news is he can tolerate cold and hot weather well, so at least, the weather won’t be a factor.
Maltese: This little lady (because that’s what she looks like) love apartment living. That doesn’t mean if you live in a detached home you can’t have one, but she is perfectly fine in small living quarters and doesn’t require a lot of exercises. She does however, need a lot of grooming to keep her mane looking as regal as it can (because let’s be honest, she does look a bit like the royalty of the dog world). She is easy to train, in all aspects, so house training will go well. Lots of praise and treats go a long way! Read more about the Maltese.
Poodle: Whether you choose a toy or a mini, poodles are easier to house train than some other small dogs. They love to learn and please you! Poodles are very trainable and teachable dogs. He is a very smart dog, and easy to train; I’m talking like a 5-star rating! You don’t have to groom him into what you might see online; that is for show dogs, but it did serve a purpose when they were working dogs!
Mini Schnauzer: You will never be bored with this little guy around you! He is just like his big brother, packed into a small body. The Mini Schnauzer is such a smart little guy; he will understand what you are asking of him when house training. Just like with any new pup, he might have a few accidents, but he will catch on quickly. He will also love curling up in your lap.
Cockapoo: This ‘designer dog’ is so adorable! He is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. He is very people oriented, meaning you might never get to pee alone in peace anymore! Your Cockapoo will love an agility course to run around in, and being a showoff. Then, he would love nothing more to curl up in your lap (which by the way now belongs to him, so make room if you have kids!)
Small dogs can be difficult to house train, because well, they can hide their business in a corner of the house and it could be a while before you find it. Some are harder than others (like my Chihuahua for example) but all of them are capable of being house trained!
