I came across a question in a forum the other day asking which salmon-based hypoallergenic dog food was best. This was a bit of a tough question because there are so many hypoallergenic dog food companies out there. Although there are many good companies out there, there is one that always got high marks from both clients at the vet and from the vet herself: Natural Balance

With all the hypoallergenic dog foods out there, it’s tough to know which one to try. There are dozens of companies with still more varieties of hypoallergenic dog food, and they aren’t all created equal. One of the best hypoallergenic dog foods out there is Natural Balance.

Natural Balance is a company that manufactures a variety of hypoallergenic dog foods. They have everything from the standard duck and potato to the increasingly popular salmon and sweet potato. In addition to their variety, they have a very good safety track record. In fact, their last recall was way back in 2012 for POSSIBLE contamination.

During the time I worked at the vet, I saw many dogs come in with food allergies and sensitivities. Their symptoms ranged from mild tearing to extreme itching resulting in aggressive chewing and licking. In all of these cases, the vet I worked for recommended Natural Balance hypoallergenic dog food, most especially the salmon and sweet potato variety. In every case, the dogs showed marked improvement in their symptoms fairly quickly.

Why Salmon-Based Hypoallergenic Dog Food?

Salmon is naturally high in omega fatty acids. These fatty acids are great for the skin, and that’s important for a dog with food allergies. A dog with food allergies always has terrible skin. It’s either dry and flaky or oily and purulent. In all cases, addressing the food allergy is the top priority.

However feeding salmon as a protein source helps the entire process along greatly, because it helps support healthy skin. Omega fatty acids promote healthy skin and a healthy coat two things which are almost always destroyed by food allergies or sensitivities.

Why Natural Balance

Natural Balance hypoallergenic dog food has a reputation as an excellent brand. In all the years I worked at the vet, I never encountered a patient who did not see fantastic results with all of the food, but most especially the salmon and sweet potato variety.  In addition to it being recommended by the vet where I worked, I know several other dog owners who’s vets also highly recommend the food. It has a great track record in both effectiveness and safety.

Salmon and Sweet Potato from Natural Balance

This variety could be the answer for you if your dog is suffering from food allergies and sensitivities. If you go that route, I highly encourage you to try Natural Balance. Between being highly thought of by vets and consumers and the added benefit of being high in omega fatty acids, it’s a great food to try.

Have you ever tried Natural Balance dog food? Or any other salmon-based hypoallergenic dog food? What do you love about it?
