Shepherd dogs are among the most popular breeds on the planet and with good reason…they are incredibly loyal, beautiful and talented dogs. Training a shepherd dog is not always the easiest thing to do however. Shepherd dog training requires some breed specific dedication. Here are some tips to follow if you are training your shepherd dog and want to help them advance in training:

Shepherd Dog Training Tips

Socialize with Other Dogs

From the earliest age, shepherd dogs need to be exposed to people and other pets. This will help them to socialize and get used to others. Like any other dog, shepherds can be quite territorial and it can be dangerous if you don’t start them early. You want them to understand their own areas, but at the same time they should be accepting of other pets and people.

Don’t Use Aggressive Training

The aggressive training methods used by many trainers is a very dangerous way to go with shepherd dogs. The animals will become quite aggressive when they see the same coming from their owners. Spend time with your pup learning the right way and don’t scream at them. They will simply think you are barking along with them or being aggressive.

Enroll in Obedience Training

Many people attempt shepherd dog training without actually knowing what they are doing. If you are not sure about what you are doing, go to a class with your dog. You both can learn together. For a dog owner and dog to learn to communicate, you both have to be paying close attention to how to speak the language. That sometimes requires a really good trainer to point it out.

Start with Simple Commands First

Another common problem with shepherd dog training is diving in to the difficult commands before they know the basics. Sit, stay and come are absolutely necessary skills before you go into the more advanced training. Trying to skip the basics will lead to nothing but frustration for you both. Teach your pup the basics and enjoy the benefits through a much easier advanced training down the road.

Use Rewards

Positive reinforcement is an absolute must when it comes to shepherd dog training. You have to use rewards, praise and plenty of affection with your dog as they reach certain milestones. It is a process to train your dog and you should revel in the small victories to help them see what is expected. Your dog learns far more from a simple pat on the head and kind word than a million years of yelling and screaming. Use the positive and your dog will learn quickly and efficiently.
