What is the Ruff N’ Tuff Dog Bed?

The Ruff N’ Tuff dog bed by K&H Pet Products is a relatively simple indoor/outdoor pillow-style bed.

Note that it doesn’t come in size small. This is fairly common for dog beds, especially those by K&H products. Don’t ask me why, I have no idea!

Also note that sizes are not standard across beds. A medium in one bed could be a small in another.

Your best bet is to ignore the name of the size entirely and just look at dimensions, which is why I included them in the table.

Okay, now that we have that cleared up, let’s look over the basic features.

Features of the Ruff n’ Tuff Dog Bed

We’re going to talk about most of these features in the pros and cons, so for now we’ll just take a quick peek.

  • Made with durable polyester fabric designed to hold up against basic wear and tear.
  • Tough exterior makes it great for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Fully hidden closures make it a little harder for your dog to tear apart.
  • Interior liner adds an extra layer of protection and keeps the fluff where it belongs (inside the bed).
  • Removable washable cover
  • Chew-resistant (super important as we’ll talk about it a lot in a minute)

Now, let’s find out how those features translate into pros and cons.

Pros of the Ruff n’ Tuff

Ruff n' Tuff dog bed review

1. Tougher-than-average exterior

The K&H K-9 Ruff n’ Tuff Indoor/Outdoor dog Bed is made with heavy duty 1260 denier polyester fabric.

If those words mean nothing to you, you’re not alone. I thought denier was a type of polyester, but it turns out it has to do with the strength.

Basically, 600D is the type used in backpacks and laptop bags. 1260, ergo, is about twice as strong as your average backpack.

Indestructible? No. Harder to destroy than the average cheap dog bed? Yes!

Basically, the exterior can resist very light gnawing and digging. However, it’s not chew-proof (more on that in the cons).

2. Hidden closures

One of the primary pros of the Ruff n’ Tuff has to do with the way they close the bed up.

Sounds silly to care so much about a zipper (or lack thereof) but when you have a dog that likes to pull on them, it does matter.

All of the closures are completely hidden from your dog’s reach. They’re located on the bottom of the bed.

Can your dog still find them? Probably. See the cons for more on that.

Still, for the average dog who just lays on their bed and doesn’t feel the need to flip it all around, it’s a definite pro.

3. Easy to clean

While your dog will have a hard time getting the cover off, you’ll find it relatively easy to remove and wash.

Keep in mind that it can only be washed in cold water and cannot go into the dryer.

The polyester fabric is also relatively easy to wipe clean with a dry cloth. Not as easy as, say, nylon or velvet, but still fairly simple to spot clean.

4. Affordable

Perhaps the biggest draw to the Ruff n’ Tuff dog bed is the price.

While “affordable” is totally subjective, compared to other pet beds of a similar durability, the price is fairly fair (see what I did there?).

K&H Pet Products in general is a mid-range brand, and the Ruff n’ Tuff falls smack in the middle of their pricing model.

Ruff n’ Tuff Cons

1. NOT Chew-Proof or “Defluff” Proof

Let’s be very very clear about something: the Ruff n’ Tuff dog bed is chew-resistant, NOT chew-proof.

A lot of those 1-star reviews start with “my dog chewed it,” and that’s not really fair because K&H says right in the description that it’s NOT chew-proof.

It’s kind of like leaving a negative review on an orange because it didn’t taste like an apple.

With that in mind, the “not chew-proof” con has nothing to do with the material itself (since it never made that claim) but rather about the fluff.

Some customers say that their dog managed to flip the bed over, open up the Velcro, defluff the bed, and then chew it up.

Since the location of the closures IS a major claim, this bears mentioning.

2. Not good for arthritic dogs

Again, the Ruff n’ Tuff bed doesn’t claim to be orthopedic, so this isn’t so much a con against the bed itself but a general “you should be aware.”

The bed is stuffed with poly-fil (polyester fiberfill) which isn’t the most supportive material.

On the plus side, though, you can buy a cheap bag of it on Amazon and add more stuffing as needed.

Prefer something a little more supportive? Check out these top orthopedic dog beds.

3. No quality guarantee

While the bed has a 1-year limited warranty that covers manufacturer defects, it does not cover damage done by your dog.

I don’t expect a 10-year warranty on a bed that costs under $100. Heck, I don’t even expect a 1-year warranty!

However, I do feel a lot more confident about purchasing something when the company offers some sort of “you’ll love it or your money back” guarantee.

4. Not waterproof

Perhaps the biggest con of all is the fact that a bed claiming to be an indoor/outdoor bed is NOT waterproof.

It wouldn’t be such a major issue if this information was presented right in the description, but I had to go digging for it.

Down in the Q&A on Amazon, one customer asked whether it was rainproof, and a short answer from the manufacturer said no, it’s not waterproof.

Now, I have no intentions of leaving my dog outside in the rain. She only naps out on the deck when she wants to & when we’re close by to let her in.

However, I expect an outdoor bed to be able to take a little rain if I forget to bring it in or put it under the canopy.

If you DO need a waterproof bed, I highly recommend either the Kuranda or the Cujo Cot.

Now that we have a good understanding of the pros and cons, let’s find out if the Ruff n’ Tuff is right for your dog.

Is the Ruff n’ Tuff Pet Bed Good for Your Dog?

I’ll be honest, this isn’t my favorite dog bed by a long shot.

Still, if your dog meets the following criteria, it is a good budget-friendly pick.

  • Your dog is not a chewer or a digger.
  • You don’t need a waterproof bed.
  • Your dog is relatively young & doesn’t need orthopedic support.
  • You want something that costs less than $100 and holds up against normal wear and tear.
  • Your dog isn’t nicknamed “The Great Destroyer of Beds.”

On the other hand, if any of these apply, you’ll want to choose another bed:

  • Your dog IS nicknamed “The Great Destroyer of Beds.”
  • He likes to chew things.
  • He’s a destuffer (he WILL find that “weak spot” on the bottom and tear out the fluff)
  • You have an arthritic dog who needs more support.
  • You need something that won’t get ruined if you forget to bring it in when it rains.

Bottom line: if your dog is relatively mellow and you just need something better than your floor for him to sleep on, this isn’t a bad choice.
