If you’re thinking about adopting a dog but aren’t sure you have a ton of time to dedicate to an incredibly needy pooch, these low-maintenance dog breeds might be just right for you. Please keep in mind, though, that all dogs need proper training and attention, so there’s no such thing as a “no maintenance” breed. Also, while these five pooches aren’t quite as high-maintenance as some other breeds, remember that every dog is different, so there is no guarantee that you’ll get a totally relaxed and easy-going pooch!

The Chihuahua dog is part of the toy AKC breed group. They stand about 6-9 inches tall at the shoulder with an average weight of 2-6 pounds and an average lifespan of 15-18 years, which is longer than many other dog breeds. This dog breed originates from the country of Mexico. They are short-haired so they only require occasional brushing and bathing. A Chihuahua makes a great apartment dog since their exercise needs can be taken care of indoors.

The French Bulldog has been an excellent companion dog for many years now. They stand about 11-12 inches tall at the shoulder with an average weight of 16-28 pounds and an average lifespan of 11-14 years. They are a dog breed that adapts well to apartment living and are a great dog choice for new dog owners since they are pretty low maintenance. This dog breed is also easy to groom, affectionate, playful and friendly. They are rather quiet dogs, don’t bark much and don’t require a great deal of exercise.

The American Staffordshire Terrier originally came about after breeding bulldogs with older Terrier dog breeds. They stand about 16-19 inches tall at the shoulder with an average weight of 57-67 pounds and an average lifespan of 12-14 years. This dog breed is known to be attentive, devoted, loyal, friendly and intelligent. They don’t need a lot of grooming- only occasional brushing to keep their fur maintained and they don’t shed much at all.

The Chinese Shar-Pei is most recognized by their compact, square body and slightly larger head. They stand about 18-20 inches tall at the shoulder with an average weight of 40-55 pounds and an average lifespan of 8-10 years. This dog breed is known for being independent, reserved, loving, devoted and affectionate. These dogs are great for those who live in an apartment as they don’t need a backyard for exercise. They have a short coat that is harsh and rough, meaning there is minimal shedding and low grooming needs.
