When you first head out to train your dog, understanding the types of dog training equipment you need can be a little bit overwhelming. If you go into one of the “dog superstores” that are on the market today, you can become downright insane. How in the world are you supposed to know what to buy? What pieces of dog training equipment do you really need? In truth, you need very little to train your dog properly in the way of equipment. Your success or failure will be largely determined by your persistence rather than your fancy equipment. That said, there are a few items that will help you a great deal.

Leash
Nobody can train a dog properly without a good leash. The leash will allow you to control and lead your new pup in such a way that they will know what is expected. Also, leashes provide safety for other animals and people. In most areas, leashes are actually required by law to take your dog out in public. This is one piece of dog training equipment that you simply can’t do without.
Collar
Along with a good leash, you need a properly fitting collar. Collars come in all types, shapes and sizes and should certainly reflect your dog’s personality if you wish. The main thing is to make sure it fits properly and it is not choking your dog. Collars are a great way to keep the right identification on the dog too.
Crate
For potty training purposes, a good crate will do wonders. The dog needs to have a “home base” of sorts within the house and a crate gives them that safe place when used properly. It is where they will sleep and rarely will they go potty when in the crate once it is established in that manner. That said, it takes some training and you can’t keep them in the crate for long periods of time. Still, it is a great dog training equipment item.
Clicker
Clickers have taken on a renewed popularity in training circles and they are highly effective when used properly. Essentially they allow for positive reinforcement through the use of a marker. When the dog does something positive, you make the click sound immediately with the clicker and reward the dog with treats, attention or toys. This method of positive reinforcement is very powerful and can work wonders with even the most challenging situations.
Treats
Dog treats are a powerful tool in the dog trainers arsenal but should only be used in tiny increments. For example, with clicker training you might be clicking way too much throughout the day for a full on treat. Most trainers will reward a good sized dog with a pea sized treat per positive situation. It is enough for the dog to make the association without making the dog overweight or fat. A great exercise program can offset any weight issues as well.
